The Virginia State Council of Machinists is the political arm of the IAM in the Commonwealth.

The Council works on behalf of all working families through involvement in the political process. We do this in cooperation with the Virginia Central Labor Councils, the Virginia AFL-CIO, other IAM Local and District Lodges, The Machinists Non-Partisan Political League, the IAM Southern Territory and the IAM Transportation Department. The Virginia State Council of Machinists was organized April 19, 1942 for the following purpose:

Virginia State Council of Machinists President Rick Howard (left) with Virginia Governor Timothy Kaine at the AFL-CIO Legislative Conference in Richmond.

bulletTo promote a closer cooperation with one another so that a more efficient coordination can be achieved on matters concerning our membership and trade jurisdiction as set forth in the IAM Constitution and Bylaws.

bulletTo advocate, promote and sponsor legislation on a state and national scale in the interest of the organized workers for a more improved social economy. Furthermore, this Council must insist on the entire membership being qualified to vote for friends of labor in elections, both state and national, and keep the membership informed as to the qualifications of the candidates for office in all organizations with which the Machinists may be affiliated.

bulletTo protect its members and affiliates against any encroachment upon its right, jurisdictional or otherwise, by hostile individuals or organizations.

bulletTo serve as an agency in the dissemination of ideas and information among the Machinists' Lodges in the State of Virginia.

bulletTo bring about a better understanding between our membership and their respective employers.

bulletTo keep all affiliated informed on all state and national labor laws affecting our membership by furnishing copies and court ruling when such is available.
